Supporting the Theravada Bhikku dialogue act is a timely need, says Mahanayake of Malwatte Chapter, Most Ven. Tibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera.
In a letter to justice and Buddha Sasana minister Wijayadasa Rajapakse, the prelate highlights the importance of setting aside political and other petty considerations in order to get the act incorporated into law.

He points to how even ancient kings led dialogues with the advice of Buddhist monks to purify the Sasana, and notes it was not only under the present regime that such dialogues were sponsored by the state.

Previous govt. ignored due to petty reasons

The Malwatte Mahanayake Thera stresses that he had brought the need for such laws even to the attention of the previous government, but it had not given any consideration due to petty political reasons.

There has been opposition to the draft bill on this act that has been tabled in parliament.

Responding to criticism, minister Rajapakse has said the government had only given legal recognition to such dialogues.

He rejected accusations that the government was going to impose laws to control Buddhist monks, and said it was up to Mahanayake Theras to do so.
