Maithri and Gota would discuss about the future of SLFP

The former defense secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that he would anticipate to have a discussion with President Maithripala Sirisena about the future of its party and the crisis the party supporters has plunged into.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa told this when we asked him about the leadership of his name proposed to the new party planned to be started by the joint opposition.

The joint opposition reports assert the leadership of the new party powered to bring the former president has been proposed to be given to Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the national organizer post is supposed to be given to Basil Rajapaksa. The new party which is has a symbol of a lotus flower, was named as “Our Sri Lanka Freedom Front” first but was later due to astrological reason the “our” part was removed.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa further stressed that he is still not spoken about forming a new party but there is a serious anti government protest in the regional sections of the SLFP with the current government and the party supporters greatly dissatisfied with the current party leadership. He said those factions are continuously insisting, him therefore he realize that it is important to form an organization and raise a voice and speak with the president soon about these problems.

However during the executive committee meeting held last week the president said that he would never allow the SLFP to be divided and he is ready to risk his life for the future of the party.

We inquired from Basil Rajapaksa about the formulation of the new party.

“We heard the new party leadership would be borne by the Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the national organizing post would be given to you, is that true?”

“No, we haven’t taken any decision about the leadership right now. Earlier those decisions were taken from up but now the names are proposed from bottom. The regional leaders of the SLFP and the party supporters are deprived. Only from them the proposals are taken to form a new organization”

“However we heard that a new party is already formed and the secretary is Sagala Kariyawasam, one of your close friends”

“No this party was already registered in 2005 by Wimal Geeganage and the name of the party is National Front and the symbol is a bat. We formed this party to use for emergency purpose. I got an invitation for the convention of the party. Now the current party name is changed to “Our Sri Lanka Freedom Front” and the symbol also has been changed as a Lotus flower”

“Is this party formed to fear Maithripala Sirisena?”

“No we don’t need to fear anybody, we are creating a space for the party supporters”

Summit Flats constructed on 9 acres of land in 1976 for the Non Aligned Summit Conference are due to be demolished very soon. Presently occupied by a mix of Joe public & Politically assigned public is a prime piece of land in Colombo. Proposal is to build 2500 houses essentially to be given to public servants. As to how they will be allocated is not clear yet. As it was during the days of the British Raj properties were allocated to civil servants according to the priority like Railway staff, Police Personnel etc. But with the post independence political culture it could be anybody with clout can inherit a new property!  

Will Rajitha undermine the account details which Anura demanded?

Health minister Rajitha Senarathna avoided answering the question raised by the chief opposition whip Anura Dissanayake last 27th when announcing cabinet decisions, about the country’s elite group of people’s account details containing billions of rupees supposedly alleged to be deposited in a bank in Dubai.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake questioned the Prime Minister to inform the factual current situation to the parliament, about Rajitha Senarathna’s the continuous statements about these accounts. Leader of the house Lakshman Kiriella on the following day said that the Prime Minister would answer the question, but he did not. During the cabinet decision media communiqué when a journalist raised a questioned Rajitha Senarathna said the investigations have been handed over to the central bank of America and the required information reaching is getting late.

However in many occasions minister Rajitha has spoken publicly about these illegal bank accounts. During the cabinet decision announcement on February 14th minister exposed that more than one billion US dollars deposited in a private bank in Dubai by a member of an elite political family and another three people related to this family.

One members bank account had US dollars 1.086 billion, a businessmen cum a MP have US dollars 500 and a former secretary and a chairman of an institute have US dollars 1.8 billion deposited in a joint account. Meantime Rajitha Senarathna’s son Chathura Senarathna said that he saw from his eyes the 420,656 million rupees illegally hidden by the Rajapaksa son’s in the foreign banks.

Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera too once told that illegal money is being deposited in bank in Dubai but expressed his displeasure how these information’s were revealed to the media before investigations.

However nobody able to reveal about these with credible evidence so far. Therefore JVP leader Anura Kumara questioned about this in the parliament last 27th.

Reports reaching us conform that Sri Lanka lost the opportunity of fetching information about these illegal pelf deposited in a bank in Dubai. In spite of revealing information’s to the media, taking irregular actions and failing to lead stealthy investigations, the Sri Lankan government lost opportunity to get information’s to retrieve the money back.

Police inside information emphasized, minister Rajitha, in spite of revealing stealthy information’s before formal investigations, about these Dubai bank accounts and other criminal charges, the investigation team have suffered serious setbacks. Before disclosing about the CCTV footage of the murder of the rugby player Wasim Thajudeen, Rajitha Senarathna said that he saw the murder recorded in the CCTV cameras. However so far no such visuals have been located and if there was such a doubt is created with the investigation team, was an opportunity given for the those criminals to destroy the evidences.

Political analysts say serious doubts have been erupted about this. Meantime so far no investigations have started against Rajitha Senarathna about the allegation leveled against him about the ownership of eight ships belong to the latter from the Rajapaksa era. Although a complaint has been made currently to the Commission to Investigate Bribery & Corruption but so far no credible steps have been taken.

Political analysts say that it would be problematic that the President and the Prime Minister continue to keep Minister Rajitha Senarathna as the cabinet spokesperson for the amount of allegations leveled against him and for presenting false information’s.

ඉඩම මිලදී ගත්තේ කවුද? රහස ඇත්තේ එතැනය. ඞී.අයි. අබේවික‍්‍රම නම් ප‍්‍රසිද්ධ නොතාරිස් විසින් සහතික කරන ලද 676 දරන ඔප්පුවට අනුව රුපියල් මිලියන 35කට මෙම ඉඩම මිලදීගෙන ඇත්තේ මේරි ලෝඞ් වික‍්‍රමසිංහ (535233314V) යන තැනැත්තිය විසිනි. මේරි ලෝඞ් වික‍්‍රමසිංහ යනු කවුද?

මෙම ඉඩම විදේශ සේවා නියුක්ති කාර්යාංශයට යාබද ඉඩමය. ඒ ඉඩම කාගේද? අලූත් ලිපිනය කාගේද? 2003 අපේ‍්‍රල් 05 වන දින එවකට විපක්ෂ නායක මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ මහතා බස්නාහිර ප‍්‍රදේශ සංවර්ධන අමාත්‍ය එම්.එච්. මොහොමඞ් මහතාට ලිපියක් යොමු කරමින් ඉල්ලා සිටින්නේ රාජපක්ෂ අනුස්මරණ අධ්‍යාපන සංස්කෘතික හා සමාජ සේවා පදනමේ මූලස්ථාන ගොඩනැගිල්ල ඉදිකිරීම සඳහා මෙම ඉඩම ලබා දෙන ලෙසය. එවකට හිටපු අමාත්‍ය එම්.එච්. මොහොමඞ් මහතා 2003 සැප්තැම්බර් 22 වන දින කැබිනට් අංක 19/2003 යටතේ කැබිනට් පත‍්‍රිකාවක් මඟින් ඊට අවසර ඉල්ලා සිටියේය. 2003 දෙසැම්බර් 03 වන දින කැබිනට් පත‍්‍රිකා අංක 10/8/1/602 යටතේ ඊට කැබිනට් අනුමැතිය ලැබෙන්නේය. 1998 අංක 23 දරන රාජපක්ෂ අනුස්මරණ අධ්‍යාපනික, සංස්කෘතික සහ සමාජ සේවා පදනම (සංස්ථාගත කිරීමේ) පනත ගැසට් නිවේදනයක් මඟින් ද ප‍්‍රසිද්ධ කරන ලදී. කපටි රාජපක්ෂ ඉඩම ලබා ගත්තා මිස කිසිදු සමාජ සේවා කටයුත්තක් මේ ඉඩමේ පවත්වාගෙන ගියේ නැත.

පනත උල්ලංඝනය කළ හැටි

රාජපක්ෂ පදනම සංස්ථාගත කිරීමේ පනතට අනුව අනාථ නිවාස, මහලූ නිවාස පිහිටුවීමට සහ පවත්වාගෙන යෑමට සමාජ සුබසාධන මධ්‍යස්ථාන පවත්වාගෙන යෑමට මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ එකඟ වූයේය. අඳ, ගොළු, බිහිරි සහ ආබාධිත තැනැත්තන් සඳහා සුබසාධන පහසුකම් සැලසීමටත් නිවර්තන නිවාස පිහිටුවීමටත් එකඟ වූයේය. එහෙත් ඒ කිසිවක් සිදු වූයේ නැත. අවසානයේ පවුලේ ඥාතීන්ගේ ලැගුම්හලක් බවට එතැන පත් වුණේය. 2011 සිට සී.එස්.එන්. හෙවත් කාල්ටන් ස්පෝර්ට්ස් නෙට්වර්ක් නම් ව්‍යාපාරය ඇරඹෙන්නේ අඳ, ගොළු, බිහිරි උන් වෙනුවෙන් සමාජ සුබසාධනය කරනවා යැයි කියන එවකට පැවති එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂ ආණ්ඩුවෙන් ඉල්ලා ගත් මෙම ඉඩමේය.

යෝෂිත මාට්ටු

රජයේ සේවකයෝත් CSN සේවයට

ප‍්‍රියන්ත අබේරත්න නම් තැනැත්තකු 2009.03.02 වන දින සිට 2013.03.13 දක්වා ශ‍්‍රී ලංකා ටෙලිකොම් ආයතනයේ සාමාන්‍යාධිකාරිවරයකු ලෙස සේවය කළේය. ඔහු ටෙලිකොම් ආයතනයේ සේවය කළ කාලය තුළ මාසිකව රුපියල් එක්ලක්ෂ තිස්දහසක (130,000) වැටුපක් ලබා ගත්තේය. එම කාලය තුළ ස්ථාන මාරුවක් හෝ වෙනත් ආයතනයකට අනුයුක්ත කිරීමක් ද සිදු වී නැත. එසේ වුව ද 2012.01.09 වන දින සී.එස්.එන් නාලිකාවේ බලපත‍්‍රය සම්බන්ධ ගැටලූවක් නිරාකරණය කරගැනීමට විදුලි සංදේශ නියාමන කොමිසමට යවන ලද ලිපියේ ප‍්‍රධාන මෙහෙයුම් නිලධාරියා ලෙස අත්සන් තබන්නේ ප‍්‍රියන්ත අබේරත්න නමැත්තාය. දේශපාලන බලය යොදවා රාජ්‍ය සේවය අවභාවිතාවට ලක්කර තිබෙන බව දැන් පැහැදිලිය.

ප‍්‍රියන්ත අබේරත්න ඔහු කවුද?

ශිරන්ති රාජපක්ෂ නොහොත් මේරි ලෝඞ් වික‍්‍රමසිංහ ආර්යාවගේ මුහුණේ වත්සුණු තවරා ඇය හැඩ ගන්වනු ලැබුවේ චාන්දනී බණ්ඩාර නම් රූපලාවණ්‍ය ශිල්පිනිය විසිනි. ඇගේ ස්වාමිපුරුෂයා වූයේ ප‍්‍රියන්ත අබේරත්න මහතාය.

කළු සල්ලි මාට්ටු

සී.එස්.එන්. ආයතනයට මුදල් ලැබුණේ කෙසේද යන්නත් ඔවුන් කර ඇති ණය ගනුදෙනු සම්බන්ධවත් පොලිස් මූල්‍ය අපරාධ කොට්ඨාසයේ උකුසු ඇස යොමු විය. විමර්ශන සම්බන්ධව B/1823/15 යටතේ කඩුවෙල මහෙස්ත‍්‍රාත් අධිකරණයට කරුණු වාර්තා කළේය. ඒ අනුව සී.එස්.එන්. ආරම්භ කිරීම සඳහා පෑන් ඒෂියා බැංකුවේ සභාපති නිමල් පෙරේරා මුදල් පරිත්‍යාග කර නැත. නමුදු ඔහු මුදල් පරිත්‍යාග කළ බවට ලේඛනයක් ඉදිරිපත් කර ඇත්තේ යෝෂිත ප‍්‍රමුඛ සී.එස්.එන්. බළඇණිය විසිනි. පොලිස් මූල්‍ය අපරාධ කොට්ඨාසයේ ප‍්‍රශ්න කිරීම්වල දී හෙළි වී ඇත්තේ බලහත්කාරයෙන් කිසියම් ලිපියක් සඳහා නිමල් පෙරේරාගේ අත්සන යොදා ගත් බවයි. ඔහු කිසි විටෙක රුපියල් මිලියන 52ක මුදලක් සී.එස්.එන්. ආරම්භ කිරීම සඳහා ලබා දී නොමැති බවය. සජින් වාස්ගේ කළු සල්ලි ගැටය කොස්මෝස් ටෙක්නොලොජි (Cosmos Technology) සහ කොස්මෝස් ප‍්‍රින්ටින් (Cosmos Printing) යන සමාගම් දෙකෙහිම අධ්‍යක්‍ෂවරිය ලෙස කටයුතු කරන්නේ ටියානා දියන්ති ඇන්තනීස් මහත්මිය ය. ඇය සජින් වාස්ගේ බිරිඳය. මෙම සමාගම් දෙකේ උපදේශකවරයා ලෙස කටයුතු කරන්නේ සජින් වාස් ගුණවර්ධනය.

සී.එස්.එන්. නාලිකාව ආරම්භ කිරීමට කොස්මෝස් ටෙක්නොලොජි සහ ප‍්‍රින්ටින් යන සමාගම් දෙකෙන් රුපියල් මිලියන 50 බැගින් මුදල් ලැබුණු බව සී.එස්.එන්. නාලිකාව අධිකරණයට කරුණු වාර්තා කර තිබුණත් පොලිස් මූල්‍ය අපරාධ කොට්ඨාසයේ විමර්ශනවල දී සජින් වාස් ගුණවර්ධන පිළිගෙන ඇත්තේ කොස්මෝස් ප‍්‍රින්ටින් යන සමාගමෙන් රුපියල් මිලියන 50ක් සී.එස්.එන්. වෙත ලබා දුන්නත් කොස්මෝස් ටෙක්නොලොජි සමාගමෙන් මුදල් නොගෙවූ බවය. ඒ අනුව රුපියල් මිලියන 50කට වගකිව යුත්තෙක් නැත.

LOLC ණය නොගෙවීම

සී.එස්.එන්. නාලිකාව ආරම්භ කිරීම සඳහා LOLC සමාගමෙන් රුපියල් මිලියන 50ක මුදලක් ණයට ගෙන තිබිණි. එම ණය නොගෙවා පැහැර හැරීම නිසා ඇපකරයක් මඟින් ණය මුදල කපා ගැනීමට LOLC ආයතනය ක‍්‍රියා කළේය. මෙම ඇපකරය ඉදිරිපත් කර ඇත්තේ සිංගප්පූරු TPL ප‍්‍රයිවට් ලිමිටඞ් නම් සමාගමයි. ඇපකරු වශයෙන් අත්සන් කර ඇත්තේ එහි සාමාන්‍යාධිකාරිවරියක ලෙස කටයුතු කර ඇති ටියානා දියන්ති ඇන්තනීස් නැතහොත් සජින් වාස් ගුණවර්ධනගේ බිරිඳය. සිංගප්පූරු TPL සමාගම ශ‍්‍රී ලංකාවේ කර ඇති එකම කාර්යය මිහින් ලංකා ගුවන් සේවයේ පර්යන්ත මෙහෙයුම (Ground Handing) සඳහා උපකරණ සැපයීමයි. එම කොන්ත‍්‍රාත්තුව ඔවුන්ට ලබා දී ඇත්තේ සජින් වාස් මිහින් ලංකා කළමනාකරණ අධ්‍යක්‍ෂ ධුරය දරන කාලයේය.

සී.එස්.එන්. වෙනුවෙන් ඇපකර තැබීමට TPL සමාගමට නැතහොත් සජින්ගේ බිරිඳට මුදල් ලැබුණේ කෙසේද?

Rohitha Rajapaksa Warns 'Yahapalana' Government Following Brother's Arrest

Following the arrest of his brother Yoshith Rajapaksa, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's third son Rohitha Rajapaksa warned the 'Yahapalana' government with a Facebook post.

"Dear Yahapalanaya..... You just stood on the tail of THE lion, now don't expect the lion, not to rip u in to parts" he said on Facebook, sharing a picture of Yoshitha Rajapaksa in handcuffs.

    

Meanwhile, he updated a profile picture which shows him with his two brothers, Namal and Yoshitha.

Yoshitha Rajapaksa was remanded yesterday over alleged fraud at Carlton Sports Network. He was charged under the Money Laundering Act.

CONTROVERSIAL LYCAMOBLE SEEKS

Ceylon Finance Today: United Kingdom-based mobile virtual network operator Lycamobile which is at risk of being struck off the register of UK businesses after failing to file accounts on time, now seeks Sri Lanka's Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) approval to buy Hutchison Telecom Lanka, sources close to negotiations told Ceylon FT on Friday.

It also learned that Lycamobile owner Sri Lankan businessman Subaskaran Allirajah who visited Sri Lanka last December, also had discussions with Hutchison's parent company in Hong Kong.

According to media reports, Lycamobile has been a generous donor to the UK's Conservative party, handing it £1.5m since 2011. Reports also said that another company in Subaskaran Allirajah's business empire is under investigation in Sri Lanka, over allegations it was used to channel cash to the former president.

"Again, there is no suggestion of any link between the Sri Lankan investigation and the rest of the Lycamobile empire," it stated.

Lycamobile is already facing the possibility of a £9.5m bill from HM Revenue & Customs for unpaid tax.

Now Lycamobile, which sells international telephone airtime, has missed a deadline to publish accounts for last year by two months, according to Companies House filings, the media report said.
Companies House is understood to have sent two warning letters to the company, controlled by Sri Lankan businessman Subaskaran Allirajah, which went unanswered, it stated.

Meanwhile, a senior company official of Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) told Ceylon FT that they were planning to conclude the Mobitel- Hutchison deal as early as possible.

Government has already appointed a three-member tender board to oversee the Mobitel- Hutchison deal, he said.

Secretary of the Ministry of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure Wasantha Deshapriya and Posts Ministry Secretary Wimalasiri Perera, it's learnt. Speaking to Ceylon FT, Batagoda said that his tender board is awaiting the technical evaluation committee report to go ahead with the Mobitel- Hutchison deal.

He also said that he is unaware of that committee's members and their present status on the deal.
Speaking to Ceylon FT earlier, Telecom Chairman P. G. Kumarasinghe said that a reputed International audit firm PricewaterhouseCoopers has submitted lower and upper range of pricing for this deal.

Hutchison's spectrum status, asset value and customer base were the main deciding factors of the value of this deal.

It was estimated that the spectrum value is between US$ 72 and 105 million and the asset value is around US$ 115 to 135 million, together with a 400,000 strong customer base.

He also said that there are several government protocols to follow before making any final decision.
"At the moment, Mobitel has only an 'interrupted' spectrum. If they tie up with Hutch, Mobitel will be a powerful mobile operator with a better spectrum", telecoms sector analysts said.

Tri Lanka, Galle, Sri Lanka - hotel review: An inspired move away from the beaches

At around 5.50pm most evenings, the natural soundscape of the forest around Sri Lanka's Lake Koggala – the chirps of cicadas and squawks of koel birds – is broken by the low thrum of a propeller engine. From the terrace of Tri, cocktail in hand, we have the perfect spot to watch the twice-daily seaplane make its descent and land on the bottle-green water's surface as it arrives from Colombo. A boat is quickly despatched to deliver any Tri residents to its private jetty.

It's the kind of service one might expect from a resort of Tri's calibre, where rooms can cost more than US$1,000 (£714) a night. But it says as much about the remote location. For travellers to southern Sri Lanka, it can be tempting just to stick to the pearl-string of beaches between Hikkaduwa and Tangalle. In a brave but inspired move, Tri's British owner, Robert Drummond, has dipped inland. His 10-room hotel is built on a six-acre patch of land along the north bank of the lake. We arrive by car, past locals drying green peppercorns in the sun, and our bruised derrières pay testament to the beaten track that Tri is off.

Over lunch, the affable and consummate general manager, Oliver James, runs through the activities on offer: yoga, massages, a visit to a tea factory or cinnamon plantation or a boat tour of the lake's islands. But the 21-metre infinity pool, cantilevered out over the lake, seems the only antidote to the 35C heat.

The resort's design is based around the Fibonacci sequence; the main path winds a nautilus shell through the resort's lemongrass bushes and lush lawns. The pool adheres to the golden ratio. The idea, explains James, was to strike a harmonious balance with nature. And it works. Drummond enlisted Shanghai-based architects A00 to build a concrete oasis in the jungle. The firm does a fine trade in installing structures in natural settings that both clash and complement, at once brutal and elegant.

Most of the rooms are set down discrete staircases from the curling path and come with lake views. Three, including ours, have a private pool. Sitting beside it, looking up at the stars, smeared thick as a balm on the night sky, gives the sublime experience of utter seclusion. 

Elsewhere, a three-storey tower provides more affordable rooms, topped by a roof terrace where we take sundowners on our first night. The glass, wood and stone box that holds a library and treatment rooms is the most impressive building of all. It's here that we enjoy an ayurvedic massage, and yoga in the top-floor open-air studio. 

Best of all is dinner every night. A six-course menu is provided six nights of the week, using mainly local ingredients – prawns from the lake and herbs from the garden. It's ambitious, beautifully-plated food. 

On departure, we reflect that perhaps we should have taken the boat trip or visited the cinnamon plantation. But then it is a well-known fact that doing nothing is far more enjoyable with the knowledge that there is something you could be doing.

Location

Given the seclusion, the activities on offer are something of a necessity. There is only so much lounging by a pool one can do. The resort offers cycling tours and visits to the Unesco World Heritage Site of Galle, with its 17th-century Dutch fort, while the laid-back beaches of Unawatuna, Weligama and Mirissa are all within easy reach. There is also a handful of resort restaurants nearby for a change of scene, such as the recently opened Cape Weligama.

Comfort

On design and comfort, our room is unimpeachable. Vines drape from the roof's edge, giving the window shelter from the full glare of the sun, and the bed is all crisp white sheets and abundant pillows. The walls soar to a ceiling 20ft above, the bathroom suite is spacious, and the two balconies have lake views. But, our stay is somewhat marred by faulty outdoor electrics. The pool lights fail to work, precluding the starlit dip and nightcap we have planned on our first night. By the end of our stay, the whole system, including filtration, has gone down and the pool quickly becomes grimy and stagnant. But our visit is only a couple of weeks after the official opening, so hopefully this can be put down to teething problems.

Hoppers, restaurant review: 'Love at first taste as I'm transported to Sri Lanka'

I fell in love in Sri Lanka. It's been 24 years now, but my love endures. If anyone asks me where they should go on holiday, I invariably say Sri Lanka. Not because they'll end up marrying the person they go with (as I did), but because they will form an ardent, lifelong love for the food (as I did).

I only have to flick through my photo album… That early morning train journey rattling through tea plantations, punctuated by hot, sweet chai and egg hoppers. Following a stream of workers to a canteen above the bus station and discovering the joyous taste explosion of cashew nut and pineapple curries. Sweet, soft idlis handed round as we sat in a tiny village, surrounded by the entire population, while their questions – What are you doing here? Why are you not married? – were translated by Mr Gamage, the local teacher. Over the years, how I've longed to have a Proustian moment with one of those hoppers – light pancakes made with a batter of fermented rice and coconut milk. Well, reader, now I have…

Hoppers is the latest in a run of excellent openings from the Sethi family, who own Bao and Gymkhana, both of which I gave rave reviews. They also back Lyle's, which I think is one of London's best restaurants. Their love and enthusiasm for hospitality, and their canny business approach (haute Asian food: what's not to love?) suggest the hits will keep coming.

Hoppers suffers the reputational nightmare of all the capital's hot new places: a bloody long queue. So quite a few times I've considered it, then given up and gone to Antidote or Zelman Meats or Dishoom. But yet another "Shall we go back to Sri Lanka this year?" conversation with my husband led to us grabbing our warmest coats and arriving at Hoppers at the ridiculous hour of 11.45am. This time, lunch would not elude us, queue be damned. We would have our remembrance of curries past.

The room is small, adorned with pictures of old Ceylon and modern Sri Lanka. The curved wall down to the loos has those bright coloured masks familiar to anyone who's brought home a souvenir wrapped up in an old T-shirt. Most clever, the coloured glasses, brown crockery and tiled table-tops that ape the never-been-tarted-up canteens of Colombo and Galle.

The menu comes with a charming glossary of Tamil food, which both informs and makes the mouth water: "Gotu kola sambol is pennywort relish with coconut, Maldive fish and onions."

It's love at first taste, of course. Fried plantain strips and cashews with a rich, sour-sweet chutney (£3) fire up the taste buds, which we slake with black pepper cream soda (£2.50). This is from the "short eats" bit of the menu, from which we are also tempted by hot butter devilled shrimps and mutton rolls. We add a string hopper (vermicelli with a mildly spiced coconut gravy to tip over it, and a topping of shredded coconut with the pungent kick of dried, crumbled Maldive fish).

I'm already transported back to Hikkaduwa beach when along comes the – yes – haute version of an egg hopper. A wafer-thin "bowl" of pancake, with a just-set fried egg within, generously strewn with pepper, is picture-perfect; the sweet onion relish, that coconut and fish medley in sambol form, and an eye-poppingly fresh coriander chutney. It's a steal at £3.50 – I could eat at least three. We've added a fish kari for £5.50 and the white fish in another russet curry tastes of long, slow cooking by a true expert in Tamil cuisine.

Do we need the Ceylonese spit chicken as well? Perhaps not, but I want to cover as much of the menu as possible in case I can't get back for a while. It's £17.50, the most expensive item, but oh, it's great. A whole bird, fantastically tender inside a crisp, spicy carapace, with a sharp knife rudely skewering its breast. There are two grilled coconut rotis and that pennywort relish, which is just divine, with a slick of sweet tamarind sauce to stir in.

It commands our attention for some time, during which I can feel the eyes of the queue outside burning a hole in my back. This, and the inherent richness of the food, makes me wonder whether I might prefer to come back at night, and make some inroads into the amazing-sounding list of "hard" drinks.

Hoppers is not London's, or the UK's, only Sri Lankan restaurant, of course. But with that pedigree and that quality of cooking, it might single-handedly push up the numbers booking flights to Colombo.

Dinesh Gunawardena To Lead New Pro-Rajapaksa Front ?

Mahajana Eksath Peramuna Leader and UPFA MP Dinesh Gunawardena is expected to be appointed as the nominal leader of the new front to be formed by the pro-Rajapaksa 'Joint Opposition', political sources said.

This move comes in the backdrop of the apparent reluctance shown by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa to lead the front.

Although former Minister Basil Rajapaksa's name is also speculated as a possible leader, a section of the 'Joint Opposition' is said to be opposed to such an appointment.

Meanwhile, a considerable number of UPFA local councilors have already expressed their willingness to join the new front.

Pivithuru Hela Urumaya leader Udaya Gammanpila, National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa and Left Democratic Front leader Vasudeva Nanayakkara have all confirmed that the new front will be formed.

Shiranthi to commission tomorrow!

Former first lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa is due to be summoned tomorrow (01) to the presidential commission on major fraud and corruption for questioning.

A statement will be obtained from her in connection with an order given to the National Housing Development Authority to grant a house at a low evaluation to a former media consultant of hers, said commission secretary Lasile de Silva.

The house in question at Kahatuduwa is worth Rs. 5.5 million, but had been estimated at only Rs. 500,000, it has been revealed.

Results begin to be shown

Meanwhile, president Maithripala Sirisena said yesterday that the law would be enforced strictly against corruption.

The people elected the new government to see a fair and unbiased mechanism in place against corruption, not the law of the jungle.

He also said 2016 would be the year in which the government would show results.

What Rajapaksa said

On the same day, his predecessor Mahinda Rajapaksa said his temperament could not be affected by sending his sons, wife or brothers to jail.

He was speaking to the media at Kaduwela magistrate’s court which remanded his son Yoshitha and four others.

Rajapaksa said his son had done nothing wrong, adding that punishment was due for any wrongdoing.

The government has been saying that two Rajapaksas would be arrested before the 04th, he said, adding that he expected justice from courts.

Sri Lanka cricket icon Kumar Sangakkara offers backing for returning coach Graham Ford

Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara has backed Graham Ford to succeed in his second stint as the nation’s head coach. 

 

 

 

 

The South African left his post as Surrey coach on Thursday to return to the international scene and a role which he previously occupied with the sub continent side from 2012 to 2014.

His appointment ends the Sri Lankan Cricket Board’s five-month long search for a successor to Marvan Atapattu, who resigned in September.

And Sangakkara feels the right choice has been made in re-hiring Ford, who guided Surrey to the Division Two title last year and convinced the left-hander to ply his trade in the second tier of county cricket for the south London club.

“I think Graham Ford is an exceptional human being and an exceptional coach,” Sangakkara told Sport360 during his visit to the National School League (NSL) Finals day.

“I had a wonderful few years under him with Sri Lanka and then last season at Surrey. I think he is the ideal choice and he’s a great man-manager with a huge amount of passion for the game.

“At this particular moment we couldn’t have asked for anyone better. I just hope that he has a wonderful tenure and I know the boys enjoy working with him so he’ll be ideal for us.”

Ford, who has agreed a deal with the SLC board until the 2019 ICC World Cup, has got little time to get his feet under the table second time around with Sri Lanka set to defend their World Twenty20 crown in March in India.

The 55-year-old coach, who cut short his first reign in charge due to personal reasons before Sri Lanka’s success in Bangladesh four years ago, can take the team forward, according to Sangakkara.

“I think in Twenty20 Cricket, Sri Lanka always have a very good opportunity because we have a varied bowling attack, we’ve got some wonderful new young players coming through and a core group of older players. Fordy, himself, would probably have liked a few more months of preparation with the team but I’m sure he’ll adjust and adapt with what he has to work with. I’m very hopeful that the team will do well.”

Meanwhile, Sangakkara, who retired from international cricket last year after a glorious 15-year career which contained a combined 63 Test and one-day international hundreds, is currently playing for the Gemini Arabians in the Masters Champions League in the UAE.

And today the left-handed batsman will face one of his idols, Brian Lara, as the Arabians look to make it two wins out of two against the Leo Lions in Dubai.

“I’m looking forward to the match very much. It’s an exciting tournament and concept. To have so many of the old greats come back and play and having a lot of current county and league cricketers come into the mix to means the cricket’s going to be of a very high quality,” said the Sri Lankan, who hit a 43- ball 86 in the tournament’s opening match to help his side to victory

“It’s going to be very entertaining and I just hope that the spectators have a really good time and they come in large numbers. I’ve had some interesting run-ins with Brian Lara when he’s dominated attacks around the world. He came to Sri Lanka in 2001 and we won the three-match Test series 3-0 but he scored 688 runs all by himself. Brian and Sir Vivian Richards are the two batsmen I really idolise.” 

President’s Secretary To Be Replaced

The current Secretary to the President, P. B. Abeykoon has been given a diplomatic post and the current Director General of the Mahaweli Authority, Anura Dissanayake is tipped to take up the post of Secretary to the President.

Prior to being appointed as the Secretary to the President, Abeykoon served as the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs, under the Rajapaksa regime. Anura Dissanayake served as the Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Education and an Additional Secretary to the President.

Several attempts were made by The Sunday Leader to contact Abeykoon and Dissanayake but those attempts proved futile.

සැබැවින්ම උගත්, නූගත් බහුතරයක්‌ කීවේම මේ දළ තොගය තලා, කැබලිකර, පුළුස්‌සා විනාශ කිරීම අපරාධයක්‌ බවය.

එහෙත් පරිසරවේදීන් කිහිප දෙනකුගේ සහ රේගු දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේද අවශ්‍යතාව පරිදි, මෙන්ම තිරසර සංවර්ධන හා වනජීවී අමාත්‍ය ගාමිණී ජයවික්‍රම පෙරේරා මහතාගේද දැඩි අවශ්‍යතාව සහ දැඩි තීරණය වූයේම මෙම ලේ තැවරුණු දළ තොගය (ඊකදදා ෂඩදරහ) විනාශ කිරීම හැර ඊට මූල්‍යමය වටිනාකමක්‌ නොදිය යුතු බවය. නොහොත්, සාහසික අන්දමින් වෙඩිතබා හෝ වෙනයම් අයුරකින් මරා දමා එහෙමත් නැතිනම් අඩපණ කර පණපිටින්ම මෙම දළ හිමිකාර ඇතුන් මිහිතලය මත දණින් වැටෙද්දී සාහසික මිනීමරුවන්ගේ පොරෝ පාරට ගොදුරුව ගැලවී බිම වැටෙන ලේ තැවරුණු දළ හිමිකරුවන්ගේ (ඇතුන්ගේ) ජීවත් වීමේ අයිතිය පෙන්නුම්කරනු වස්‌ විනාශ කරනු හැරෙන්නට වෙන කළ යුතුව ඇත්තේ කුමක්‌ද? ලොව කොතැනක දිවි ගෙවූවද ඒ සියලු සත්ත්වයාම මහී කාන්තාවගේ දරුවෝය. අපට මෙන්ම සියලු සතා සිව්පාවාට මේ මිහිතලය මත ජීවත් වීමේ අයිතිය තිබේ. ඒ අතරින්ද මිනිසාගේම අත්තනෝමතික කටයුතු හේතුවෙන් වඳවී යැමේ තර්ජනයට ලක්‌ව සිටින ශාක හා සතුන්ගේ ආරක්‍ෂාව වෙනුවෙන් ගනු ලැබූ ඒ උත්තුංග මානව පරිත්‍යාගය පරිසර හිතකාමී කවුරුන්ද අනුමත කරනු ඇත.

ලේ තැවරුණු, ජාවාරමකට ගොදුරු වූ දළ තොගයේ හිමිකාර ඇතුන් වෙනුවෙන් සදාචාරාත්මක තීන්දුවක්‌ ලෙස 26 වැනිදා ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ වනජීවී සහ රේගු බලධාරීන් එසේ ගත් තීන්දුව ලෝ ප්‍රකට වනු නොඅනුමානය. එය වනජීවී සංරක්‍ෂණ ඉතිහාසයේ අලුත් පරිච්ඡේදයක්‌ සනිටුහන් කරනු ඇත. 

ගාලුමුවදොර දී 26 දා පෙරවරුවේ ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ කීර්ති නාමය වෙනුවෙන් ලොවට හඬ හා කී පණිවිඩය නම්, වඳවී යැමේ තර්ජනයට ලක්‌ව සිටින සමස්‌ත ජීවී වර්ගයාගේ විමුක්‌තිය වෙනුවෙන් ශ්‍රී ලාංකිකයන් ලෙස අප පෙනී සිටින බවය.

එසේම ලෝකයේ ප්‍රථම වතාවට බෞද්ධ ආගමික වතාවත් ප්‍රමුඛව සර්වාගමික වතාවත්වලට මුල්තැන දුන් මෙවන් "පුණ්‍යකර්මයක්‌" ලොවේ තවත් නැත. "සියලු සත්වයෝ නිදුක්‌ වෙත්වා..." යනුවෙන් අධිෂ්ඨානශීලී ප්‍රාර්ථනයක්‌ සිදුකරන අපගේ බෞද්ධ වත් පිළිවෙත් අනුව යමින් ලොවේ කොතැනක හෝ දිවි ගෙවූවද ජීවිතයේ සැඳෑ සමය ගෙවන මෙවන් වටිනා ජීවිතවලට පිං අනුමෝදන් කිරීම බෞද්ධ අප ලැබූ භාග්‍යයකි. ගාලු මුවදොර පිටියේදී අප ලොවට හඬගා කීවේ බෞද්ධයන්ගේ අපිරිමිත සත්ව කරුණාව නොවන්නේද? ඒ නැතිව දළ යුගලක්‌ නිසා අකල්හි ජීවිතයෙන් සමුගත් ඒ දැවැන්තයන්ගේ අකාරුණික මරණය ගැන ළතෙත් හදවත් නැතිව එම දළවලට මිලක්‌ නියම කරන්නේ කෙලෙසින්ද? 

2012 වසරේ මැයි මස 15 වැනිදා කෙන්යාවේ සිට ඩුබායි දක්‌වා නාවික මාර්ගයෙන් ප්‍රවාහනය කරමින් තිබූ ටොන් 1500 ක්‌ වන මෙම ඇත්දළ 359 ක ප්‍රමාණය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට (කොළඹ වරාය) එන්නේ කොළඹ හරහා නැවත (ප්‍රති) නැව්ගත කිරීම සඳහාය. එනම්, වෙළෙඳ නාවික මධ්‍යස්‌ථානයක්‌ වශයෙන් කොළඹ යොදාගන්නා නිසාය. එහිදී සැක සහිත මෙම ඇත් දළ කන්ටේනරය ශ්‍රී ලංකා රේගු නිලධාරීන්ගේ පරීක්‍ෂාවට භාජනය වන අතර, ඒ තුළ මෙම තහනම් දළ ඇති බවට හඳුනා ගන්නා ලදී. "ලෝකයේ වඳවී යැමේ තර්ජනයට ලක්‌ව ඇති ශාක හා සතුන්ගේ අන්තර්ජාතික වෙළෙ¹ම පිළිබඳ සම්මුතිය (ක්‍ෂඔES ඤබඩැබඑසදබ දබ ෂබඑeරබ්එසදබ්ක ඔර්de සබ Eබාaබටැරුd Sචැජසැs දෙ උසකා Faමබ් aබා Fකදර්) ට අත්සන් කර, එම සම්මුතියේ සාමාජික රටක්‌ සේ කටයුතු කරන ශ්‍රී ලංකාව මෙසේ මෙම ඇත්දළ තොගය අත්අඩංගුවට ගනු ලබන්නේ එම නීතිමය ප්‍රතිපාදන සැලකිල්ලට ගෙනය.

සාමාන්‍යයෙන් මෙසේ අත්අඩංගුවට පත්වන නීති විරෝධී වන සත්ත්ව හා ශාක කොටස්‌ විනාශ කර දැමීම සදාචාරාත්මක තීන්දුවක්‌ ලෙස ලොව පිළිගනී. මෙසේ වරක්‌ පිලිපීනය මගින් මේ ආකාරයේම ප්‍රති නැව්ගත කිරීමට පැමිණි අප්‍රිකානු ඇතුන්ගේ දළ තොගයක්‌ එරට රජය මගින් ප්‍රසිද්ධියේ ගිනිතබා වනසා දැමීය. එහි අර්ථය වන සත්ත්ව කොටස්‌ සඳහා මිලක්‌ නියම නොකර වටිනාකම ශූන්‍ය කර දැමීමය.

කවුරුන් මොනවා කීවද 26 දා පෙරවරුවේ ගාලු මුවදොර පිටියේදී වනජීවී, රේගු අංශ හා එක්‌ව පරිසරවේදීන් කිහිප දෙනකුගේ බලවත් පරිශ්‍රමය මත, ඉහත කී ඇත්දළ (ඊකදදා ෂඩදරහ) තොගය විනාශ කිරීම (වටිනාකම ශූන්‍ය කිරීම ශ්‍රී ලංකා රජය ගත් අතිශය වැදගත් තීන්දුවකි. අපේ වනජීවී සංරක්‍ෂණයේ තරම හා ආකල්පය ලොවට හඬගා කී අවස්‌ථාවකි. ලෝ සතුන්ට බුදුහිමි දෙසූ මහා කරුණාව, බෞද්ධ රාජ්‍යයක්‌ වශයෙන් පතළ කළ අවස්‌ථාවකි. 

එහි ගෞරවය සිංහල, දෙමළ, මුස්‌ලිම් හෝ බෞද්ධ, ඉස්‌ලාම්, හින්දු, බර්ගර් යෑයි නොකියා ලැබෙන්නේ සමස්‌ත ශ්‍රී ලාංකිකයන්ටය.

මෙම දළ තොගය විනාශ නොකර එය ආර්ථික වටිනාකමකට හරවා ගත යුතුව තිබුණේ යෑයි නෝක්‌කාඩුවෙන් පසුවන අයටද මෙහිදී යමක්‌ කියා දිය යුතුය. එනම් මෙසේ ලෝක වන සත්ව සංරක්‍ෂණයට මෙන්ම එවන් ලෝක සම්මුති සන්ධානවලටද රටක්‌ හැටියට අප ගරුකරන බව මෙම දළ තොගය විනාශ කිරීම (ආර්ථික වටිනාකම ශූන්‍ය කිරීම) මගින් ප්‍රදර්ශනය කිරීමය. එමෙන්ම ඉන් ලැබෙන අතිමහත් ලෝක කීර්තිය හමුවේ ඉදිරියේදී අප රටේ වන සත්ත්ව සංරක්‍ෂණය උදෙසා සැලකිය යුතු අරමුදල් ලැබිය හැකි බව ප්‍රත්‍යක්‍ෂ වීමය. නොහොත් එම අරමුදල් සඳහා ප්‍රමුඛත්වය අප රටට නිතැතින් හිමිවීමය. රුපියල් මිලියන 370 ක්‌ වෙනුවට ඊටත් වඩා මූල්‍යමය හා අවස්‌ථාමය ප්‍රතිලාභ රැසක්‌ ඉදිරියේදී අපට අත්පත් වනු ඇතැයි පාරිසරික හා ආර්ථික විද්වත්තු පෙන්වා දෙති.

2012 මැයි මස දී අත්අඩංගුවට පත්වන මෙම දළ තොගය මේ දක්‌වා වසර තුනකට වැඩි කාලයක්‌ විනාශ නොකර තබා ගැනීමම අප රටට කැළලක්‌ ඇති කළ කාරණයකි. එදා අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීම සිදුකළ මොහොතේ ජාත්‍යන්තර මාධ්‍ය ඊට ප්‍රචාරයක්‌ ලබාදුන් අතර මේ දක්‌වා ලෝක ප්‍රජාව බලා සිටියේ ශ්‍රී ලංකාව මෙම දළ තොගය සඳහා සදාචාරාත්මක තීන්දුව ලබා දෙන්නේ කෙලෙසද යනුවෙනි.

සැබෑව නම් ඉකුත් රජය මගින් ඊට සදාචාරාත්මක තීන්දුවක්‌ ලබා නොදීමය. ඒ වෙනුවට ජනාධිපති ලේකම් කාර්යාලයේ ලිපි ශීර්ෂයකින් එවකච රේගු අධ්‍යක්‍ෂ ජනරාල්වරයා අමතන අතිරේක ජනාධිපති ලේකම් දන්වා සිටින්නේ අදාළ දළ තොගය "කලම්බු ලොජිස්‌ටික්‌" නම් ආයතනයක්‌ වෙත භාරදෙන ලෙසයි. එහෙත් එහි ඇති බරපතළ වරද හා මාධ්‍ය මගින් ලබාදුන් ප්‍රචාර හේතුවෙන් දළ තොගය තවදුරටත් කන්ටේනරයක්‌ තුළම ගබඩා කරන්නට රේගුව කටයුතු කරයි.

වත්මන් රජය සමයේදීද යෝජනා වන්නේ මෙම දළ තොගය මුදල් බවට පත්කර එම මුදල ජාතික වකුගඩු අරමුදලට බැර කරමුය යන්නය. එහෙත් ඒ සඳහා පරිසරවේදීන් දැඩි විරෝධතාව ප්‍රකාශ කරන්නේ ලේ තැවරුණු දළවල හිමිකරුවන්ගේ මරණයට ගෞරවයක්‌ ලබාදෙනු පිණිස හා ජාත්‍යන්තර "සයිටීස්‌" සම්මුතියේ පාර්ශ්වකරුවකු ලෙස අපට ඇති වගකීම සම්බන්ධයෙනි.

මීට පෙර ඔක්‌තෝබර් මස 4 වැනිදාට යෙදුණු ලෝක සත්ත්ව දිනයේදී මෙම දළ තොගය විනාශ කරන බවට යෝජනා වුවත්, එය යළිත් කල් ගියේය. මේ ඇත්දළ තොගයේ "රස" කාට කාටත් වැටහුණු නිසා විය හැකිය. එනමුත් රේගු ජෛව විවිධත්ව අංශයේ නිර්මාතෘ මෙන්ම එහි හිටපු ප්‍රධානී සමන්ත ගුණසේකර, පරිසරවේදී විද්‍යා අබේගුණසේකර ඇතුළු පරිසරවේදීන්ගේ හා රේගුවේ බලවත් ඉල්ලීම පරිදි පසුව රජය තීරණය කරනු ලැබුවේ ජාත්‍යන්තර රේගු දිනය යෙදෙන ජනවාරි 26 දා ගාලු මුවදොර පිටියේදී තලා කුඩුකර විනාශ කර දැමීමටය. ජනාධිපති මෛත්‍රිපාල සිරිසේන, අගමැති රනිල් වික්‍රමසිංහ යන මහත්වරුන්ගේ ප්‍රධානත්වයෙන් හා "සයිටීස්‌" සම්මුතියේ ලේකම් "ජෝන් ස්‌කැන්ලොන්" මහතාගේ සහභාගිත්වයෙන් මෙම කටයුත්ත සිදුකිරීමට සැලසුම් කළ අතර තිරසර සංවර්ධන හා වනජීවී අමාත්‍ය ගාමිණි ජයවික්‍රම පෙරේරා මහතා මීට නොමඳ සහය ලබා දුන්නේය. ඔහුගේ දැඩි තීරණය නිසා නොවන්නට මෙසේ ඇත්දළ විනාශ කිරීම සිදු නොකෙරෙනුද ඇත.

26 දින පෙරවරුවේ පෙර සඳහන් කළ පරිදි ජනාධිපතිවරයා සහ අගමැතිවරයා නොපැමිණියද සයිටීස්‌ මහ ලේකම් සහ වනජීවී ඇමැති ගාමිණී ජයවික්‍රම පෙරේරා මහතාගේ ප්‍රධානත්වයෙන් දළ විනාශ කිරීමට අදාළ කටයුතු ආරම්භ වූයේ විශේෂයෙන්ම බෞද්ධ වතාවත් පරිදිs මියගිය ඇතුන්ට පැන් වඩා පිං අනුමෝදන් කරමිනි. පූජ්‍ය ඕමල්පේ සෝභිත, කැලණි විහාරාධිපති පූජ්‍ය කොල්ලුපිටියේ මහින්ද ධම්මරක්‌ත හිමි, පූජ්‍ය අතුරලියේ රතන යන හිමිවරුන්ගේ ප්‍රධානත්වයෙන් පැවැති බෞද්ධ වතාවත්හිදී සයිටීස්‌ මහලේකම් ජෝන් ස්‌කැලෝන් මහතාද පැන් වැඩීමට එක්‌වීම විශේෂයකි. මෙය ජාත්‍යන්තර මාධ්‍යයට අති සුවිශේෂ ප්‍රවෘත්ති විශේෂාංගයක්‌ වූවාට සැක නැත.

අනතුරුව පෞද්ගලික ආයතනයක්‌ මගින් සවිකර තිබූ කැබලි කිරීමේ යන්ත්‍රයක්‌ මගින් එකින් එක දළ කැබලි බවට පත්වූයේ ආරාධිතයන් ඊට ආරම්භය ලබාදීමෙන් පසුවය. මෙසේ පැය කිහිපයක්‌ තිස්‌සේ කැබලි කරන ලද ඇත් දළ තොගය සුරක්‍ෂිතව එකතු කර, ආරක්‍ෂිත විධි විධාන යටතේ ගබඩා කර පසුදා පුත්තලමේ "ජියෝ සයිකල්" ආයතනයට අයත් සිමෙන්ති නිෂ්පාදන උඳුනේ බහා සෙන්ටිග්‍රේට්‌ අංශක දෙදහසකට වැඩි උෂ්ණත්වයකදී 27 දා දහනය (ආදාහනය) කරනු ලැබීය.

මෙවන් සුවිශේෂ අවස්‌ථාවක්‌ ජාත්‍යන්තර මාධ්‍යයේ දැඩි කතාබහට ලක්‌වූ අතර ලෝක ප්‍රජාව ශ්‍රී ලංකාව කෙරෙහි බලනු ඇත්තේ සත්ව සංවේදී රටක්‌ විලසය. එහි ප්‍රතිලාභ අත්කර ගැනීමද ඉදිරියේදී රජයේ වගකීමකි. මෙවන් අවස්‌ථාවකට රාජ්‍ය නායකයන් දෙපළ සහභාගි වූයේ නම් එම ප්‍රතිඵල දෙගුණ තෙගුණ වනවාට සැක නැත. එහෙත් සිදුවූ දේ වී හමාරය. කවුරුන් හෝ අනේ අපොයි කීමට හේතුවක්‌ නැත.

මන්ද, මෙම දළ ලබාගැනීම සඳහා අප්‍රිකානු) ඇතුන් තම ජීවිත පූජා කළ අයුරු මේ කවුරුනුත් නොදුටු නිසාය. එවන් පාපතර දර්ශන දැක බලාගන්නට වුවමනා නම් ඔබට ඒ වෙනුවෙන් ඇති අන්තර් ජාල වෙබ් අඩවි පීරා නිරීක්‍ෂණය කළ හැකිය. අපට කිව හැක්‌කේ බෞද්ධ පසුබිමක සිට මෙවන් අකල් මරණ වනේ වන සතකුටවත් සිදු නොවේවා" යන යන පැරණි හෙළ ප්‍රාර්ථනාවය.

A growing and worrying trend seen at restaurants and hotels along the south coast is causing concern among Sri Lankan visitors.

Segregation of visitors on the basis of foreign tourists and locals is real and apparent. Restaurants refuse to serve locals while hotels refuse to take bookings from locals.

If you look South Asian and walk into Central Beach Inn on Mirissa beach, you are likely to be asked, “Where are you from? Are you Sri Lankan?” If you say “yes” they will refuse to show you the menu.

If you then ask why, they will tell you, “It is because we have had unruly locals stay previously.” The staff would say that it is not their doing but their employer’s decision.

Some hotels and restaurants have even placed “foreigners only” signs in front of toilets while others have openly displayed their apartheid message on the name board, as seen at Ram’s Surfing Beach.

Tourists claim to have seen flyers advertising parties exclusively for foreigners during the Poya weekend.

The trend is so disturbing and disgusting that it is sure to make every Sri Lankan who experiences the taste of discrimination at these hotels and restaurants a Rosa Park, who in 1955 triggered a civic rights campaign throughout America after she was thrown out of a bus because of her skin colour.

In an anonymous comment on the Trip Advisor travel website, a Sri Lankan born man, married to a Caucasian Australian woman and living in Australia, spoke about the disgusting experience he underwent

He said he went to Central Beach Inn and ordered coffee for him and his in-laws. When he asked for the menu he was told “we do not serve the locals”. But they said they could serve coffee to his white-skinned Australian in-laws.

During our visit to down south to verify the complaints we found a restaurant named Surf Shack refusing to serve groups that included locals. At Ram’s Surfing Beach at Midigama, the staff refused to book a triple room for two locals and a tourist.

When asked, they said the reason for this was Sri Lankans had destroyed property and stolen towels.

Hotel Association president Hiran Cooray said these inns were not members of their association. He said association members would not resort to discriminatory practices as Sri Lankan visitors accounted for 25 percent of their business.

He said that while the association did not have any legal power to stop this practice, the Tourist Board could take punitive measures by revoking their licences.

Yoshitha, 4 others remanded for alleged money laundering

Lieutenant Yoshitha Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and four others were remanded till February 11 by Kaduwela Magistrate Dhammika Hemapala yesterday. They were produced before him by detectives of the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID). Yoshitha is accused of money laundering to the tune of Rs. 365 million, criminal breach of trust, forgery and undervaluing imported items obtained by Carlton Sports Network.

The other four, accused of aiding and abetting, are Nishantha Ranatunga, former Secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket, Rohan Welivita, media cooridinator for the former president, Ravinath Fernando and Kaushal Dissanayake. A sixth suspect, now abroad, is to be arrested upon her return, detectives said.

The arrest of Yoshitha Rajapaksa came after FCID detectives questioned him at Navy Headquarters yesterday. Since he is an officer of the Navy, the questioning this time had been carried out after he was summoned to Navy Headquarters in the Fort. From there, detectives accompanied him to the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court where he was produced before Magistrate Hemapala in his chambers together with the four others.

FCID detectives said yesterday that they had seized Rs. 165 million from the CSN bank account which had not been accounted for. They alleged that funds for setting up the television channel had come from illegal sources abroad and also funds deposited in foreign banks had been remitted back to Sri Lanka.

Former President Rajapaksa, his brothers Basil and Gotabaya, his wife Shiranthi and son Namal were among those present in the Court premises. Also present were former Ministers Rohitha Abeygunasekera and Johnston Fernando.

Facebook’s Zuckerberg is now sixth richest man on the planet

Mark Zuckerberg is a busy man, this last quarter, between paternity leave and promoting Free Basics, he’s managed to amass a net worth of $47.5 billion, to become the sixth richest man on the planet. According to Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the 31-year-old co-founder of Facebook has managed to pass the $45.9 billion holdings of brothers Charles and David Koch by raising $6 billion on Thursday. His propulsion to the title of America’s fourth richest was the implication of Facebook delivering a record revenue over the last quarter.

The only other billionaires ahead of Zuck are Bill Gates, Amancio Ortega, Warren Buffett, Jeff Bezos and Carlos Slim. As his Facebook timeline would tell you, this Zuckerberg has made some interesting lifestyle choices that might have something to do with his success. For instance, he’s simplified his wardrobe into a collection of t-shirts and sweatshirts of the same colour, so that he doesn’t have to spend time picking out clothes every morning.

Facebook may hold the top spots in app store with WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger under its wing, but the recent lines of focus for Zuckerberg seem to be virtual reality, artificial intelligence and Internet.org.

But, as a father, Zuckerberg hasn’t been all work and no play. Whether it’s a visit to the doctor’s or first attempt at swimming, the Facebook CEO has spend quality time with his daughter as the company drove the revenues through the roof.
