A move is on by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to have senior minister of the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Nimal Siripala de Silva as the new prime minister.
New President Maithripala Sirisena on Friday at his swearing-in ceremony installed UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe as prime minister who officially took his oaths.
In this backdrop the UPFA has decided to obtain a majority of signatures from lawmakers to be submitted to the Speaker of Parliament seeking to install Nimal Siripala de Silva as prime minister.
Meanwhile UNP Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake had sought to obtain the resignation letter of UPFA prime minister Dimu Jayaratne who told him he cannot do so as he was not told by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
