President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed that his predecessor Mahinda Rajapaksa be given former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s official residence at Stanmore Crescent, Colombo. This house has all the luxuries and has a garden extending to several acres. The ex-president is to be given this house as a result of his meeting with his successor on the night of January 14.
Since his request for an official residence met with a favourable response in that manner, Mahinda, together with speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, asked the president that Gotabhaya too, be given a house. President Sirisena has promised to look into that.
However, when Mahinda was the president, he had given his predecessor Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga only a second class house at Torrington Square, previously used by an additional secretary. As she had gone to stay there, there were no pipe borne water, electricity or sanitation facilities, and all those had been given some time after she began her stay.
Anyhow, the incumbent president, who shows kindness even to his enemies, has begun giving good precedence of Maithri Paalanaya with his predecessor.
