President Maithripala Sirisena is reported to have prevented a possible move to oust Speaker of Parliament Chamal Rajapaksa according to a source at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo.
For there to be a change in the Speaker's position, he must either resign or a no-confidence motion should be brought up against him by the majority of MPs in Parliament.
The seat of the Speaker can also fall vacant upon his death.
