Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshappriya and Police chief NK Illangakoon have become instant heroes of the public for ensuring a free and fair election that helped install a new President in Maithripala Sirisena.
The two men have also come in for high praise from political commentators.
Election monitor, PAFREL has also lauded Deshappriya and Illangakoon for their brave stand against violence and other irregular activities in the run-up to the poll.

"We are extremely pleased and happy over the manner in which the election was conducted yesterday (January 8) and wish to thank in particular the Elections Commissioner, the Police chief and the entire Police department.
