A gentlemen’s retirement - Brendon Mcallum

From LankaNewsWeb - The above photographs would be a memorable one for the cricket lovers of Sri Lanka which was taken during a 20/20 match played between Sri Lanka and New Zealand. The batsman was Brendon Mcallum and the bowler was Akila Dananjaya. Brendon’s co batsmen Rob Nichol was hitting for a ball from Akila Dananjaya which struck at Akila’s face while trying to stop the ball.

Although there was an easy run taken, Brendon who stopped taking the run, ran towards Akila Dananjaya and looked at his injury. Due to the equal scoring of two teams, Sri Lanka won during the super over. If Brendon was not concerned about Akila and would have taken the run the Kiwis would have won the match.

This incident would stay in memory of Sri Lanka cricket lovers due to Brendon Mcallum’s alias BAZZ or BIG MAC’s gentlemen’s attitude.

A Facebook Tribute to Baz

Sri Lankan cricket lovers were sad during Brendon Mcallum’s farewell due to his gentlemen attitude similar to Sangakkara, Mahela and Muralidaran was getting retired. It is very evident from the photographs posted in the facebook. Bigmac who came to the international grounds wearing his pads unfortunately got out for 25 runs in the second innings in the test match played between Australia and New Zealand. However during the first innings he made a record breaking fastest test century in just 54 balls.

Although Bigmac and his team able to make an unimaginable defeat and perform an unbelievable batting during the last two matches when Sri Lanka toured the New Zealand, the Sri Lankan cricket fans highly respected Brendon due to his gentlemen behavior.

Brendon Mcallum who joined the New Zealand national cricket team as a wicket keeper was not an all rounder during his initial stages. However following the retirement of captain’s Stephen Fleming and Daniel Vitori, Brendon Mcallum took the responsibility and became the rescuer of the team.

Now he has become the most aggressive player in international cricket and he has become equally aggressive when playing test matches, one day and 20/20 matches which are his specialty. Following he became the captain, the New Zealand team has become high in all three ratings and won 11 test matches out of 31. Out of 62 one day matches he has able to win 36 matches and out of 28, 20/20 matches he has led his team to win 13 matches.

Meantime during the 2015 one day world cup he was able to lead his team undefeated till the last match. During the final match he lost to the Australians and could not relish the world cup. However he has become the first player to lead the New Zealand up to the finals of a world cup. He has taken 6623 runs in 101 test matches including a triple century and 12 centuries. In his last test match he was able to take a century during the first innings but unfortunately got out for 25 runs in the second innings. He reached his century in 54 balls and was the fastest century recorded in the world. He has played 262 one day matches and taken 6083 runs inclusive of five centuries and 32 half centuries. He has become aggressive player in 20/20 matches and obtained 2140 runs in 71 matches. That has become the most highest runs taken by a player in the 20/20 and he is the first player to exceed 2000 runs. Mcallum has hit 107 six’s in all test matches and that is the most highest a player has hit. He has hit 200 six’s in one day matches and 91 six’s in 20/20 matches.

The below are the few notes written by Sri Lanka cricket fans about Mcallum’s farewell.
