Ranil, a qualified statesmen, a strategic thinker with maturity and patience

By Ali Asghar - Lankanewsweb
Nominating Maithripala Sirisena as a common candidate to challenge Mahinda Rajapaksa in the coming presidential election proves the caliber of a matured strategic thinker of qualified statesmen working for the best interest of its citizens.
In 2004 in order to coexist with Chandrika led People’s Alliance in spite of obtaining popularity among the majority Buddhist Singhalese the JVP purportedly created an anti Ranil opinion, a smear campaign against Ranil Wicramasinghe to damage his reputation to portray a negative image of the UNP leadership among the grassroots majority public forecasting the country would be divided and a part of it will be given to the LTTE if UNP regime comes to power. The anti Ranil opinion created by the JVP during the probationary government was further promoted by the UPFA led Mahinda who was continuously ignored and abstained to legislate the 17th amendment preventing to establish the independent commissions bill by not holding free and fair elections thereby obtaining a synthetic majority. The JVP and the JHU gains popularity by being a coalition partner of the SLFP led alliance in order to be a prominent among the majority Buddhist masses. The JVP, who always work only for the best interest of their party, undermined the best interest of the people and failed to take prompt action when necessary. The JVP, who always in searched for an opportunity to support and hold the falling regime and tried to coexist. After the end of the war in 2009 the JVP and the JHU continuously witnessed the deterioration of the law and order of the UPFA administration and continuously had a blind eye and whitewashed the regimes dirty linen and undemocratic conduct nourishing the Rajapaksa regime with enzymes. The JVP who is only capable of criticizing the governance failed to take appropriate action in favour of its citizens in due time. Therefore the JVP and the JHU is directly accountable for the deterioration of the law and order and the current economic crisis the country is faced with. In simple words the JVP and the JHU has played with the lives of its citizens. The JVP and JHU continuously promoted the Anti Ranil opinion witnessing and anticipating a collapse in the economy.

The JVP and the JHU’s policy convinced that, they don’t mind the country’s fall but Ranil should not come to power. The continuous ignorance and resentment to legislate the 17th amendment which is not only capable of holding a free and fair election but to promote the rule of law, good governance and the strength the public service. Therefore the JVP and the JHU is blameworthy for having a blind eye allow escalating the lawlessness of the Mahinda Rajapaksa’s authoritarian regime.
The attitude of the JVP and the JHU is that they are always ready to help to create a coalitions and coincide with a corrupt alliance in order to strengthen their socialist and nationalistic vision of their party but they will never be an ally with a single independent party like UNP who has ruled the country three times after the independence, who has contributed a lot for the country’s development to stabilize the economy and a party who is always popular among the citizens to unite all religious ethnicities and minorities. In simple words the JVP and the JHU cannot coexist with a development partner like UNP simply because their survival will be eroded.
The “Anti Ranil opinion” and “Ranil is unable to win elections” slogan was synthetically created and socialized to gain a popularity among the majority mass in such a way that few qualified professional to paupers started to promote this slogan from the highest legal and professional hierarchy to an ordinary labour force in a cafeteria (Tea Kade). The majority of the Sri Lankan public has a fanatic psyche that their head of state should possess a brave personality like Mahinda Rajapaksa with a mustache who can attract people’s attention by cuddling an infant, twisting his jaw, joining for a cup of tea and waving hands to the public. The majority of the Sri Lankan people has always has a beneficiary expectation anticipating favours from a powerful source, the people think if we become closer to this wealthy and powerful ally, we can get something free and settle down for the rest of our lives. They are lease bothered to follow a leader with a long term vision who speaks with statistics and figures who can lead the country forward. We Sri Lankans are fortunate to see such an enchanting personality from 2005 who lead a brutal war, capable of inducing a majority community against the minorities, trying to become a head of state only through Buddhist Singhalese masses, insincere to its people and treat the minorities as second class citizens. By increasing his family rule in his governance, Mahinda Rajapaksa have completely eroded the democratic rights of its citizens who are now unable to expect a simple free and fair justice for an ordinary complaint in the local police station and in the court of law.
The executive power vested in an executive president has proved how the abuse of power has been proportionally increased after 1998 Wayamba, 1999 Presidential Election and 2001 General Elections by consecutive presidents after late president D.B. Wijethunga who held a free and fair election and how the executive power has concentrated to one single location and how the power is manipulated to weaken the democratic arms to create an authoritarian tyrannical ruler.
I can remember sometimes back Ven Athuruliye Rathna during a media communiqué said that the JHU is rendered in a job to push the UPFA regime to the correct path when it goes astray. The JHU and the JVP by anticipating the efficacy, the corruption of the Mahinda led UPFA and the fall of the country has wasted nine years trying to lead the blind bull into the correct track. It appears until nine years the JVP and the JHU has allowed the bull to trespass the country economy and the rule of law by purportedly strengthening the hands of a corrupt leader whenever and wherever possible.
The late president J.R. Jayawardana waited for his presidency for 27 years and became the head of state when he was 72. The late president Ranasinghe Premadasa too waited for 28 years for his presidency. May be qualification and experience is enough to become a politician but maturity, strategic thinking, sensitivity and patience too is very important to become a head of state and to become a statesmen.
Therefore I would like to give a piece of advice to the JVP specially to its general secretary Tilvin Silva who always voice to create a third force, that you should refrain and reform your party policies in such a way that your priority should not limit only to criticism but to work for the best interest of its citizens not to the best interest of your party. I would give another advice to the JHU specialist Patali Champika Ranawaka (Mr. Saasana arakshaka Bala mandalaya) that however you try induce the Buddhist Singhalese to acquire 50% votes to form a Singhalese nationalistic government the qualified Buddhist would never render you such a majority. Whatever the nationalistic slogan you try to create among the Buddhist masses to increase the vote bank of your nationalistic party, would never be materialize.
People in Sri Lanka who are qualified but lack of political maturity and strategic thinking who yelp and prattle should realize in a country where all the democratic arms are dependent to each other to protect a single central executive, it is impossible to democratically challenge that executive who is above the law and expect free and fair justice from state institutions. A politician may compromise on deals and offer concessions to come to power but a genuine statesman believe in practical policies, strategic thinking and remain patience to reach his destination. Therefore if the Rajapaksa regime use his abuse of power in this coming election and try to acquire a false victory by rigging the votes, all people despite whatever the race and ethnicity should mobilize together to eliminate the current bestial lawless Rajapaksa regime through a peoples rebellion.
