May 07, 2015 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division is a mere political tool that certain politicians get hammered, provincial councilor Udaya Gammanpila said.
Gammanpila, the General Secretary of Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, told reporters Thursday that the newly established division is politically biased."There is nothing in the world history; choosing complaints to be handed over to the Police. Today, if there is a major financial crime, we have to tell it to the sub committee headed by the Prime Minister,"
"First they are looking at who is charged. If the person affiliated with 'Yamapalanaya' then the charge will be in the dustbin. If he is against 'Yamapalanaya' then it'll get investigated,"
"So the politicians decides what should and what shouldn't be investigated. No such Police exists in the world. I'm asking the Police Spokesman." Gammanpila stressed.
When contacted Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara told LBO that there is no political interference over the FCID investigations.
"Not only the government but also any ordinary person can lodge a complaint. There is even a complaint lodged by a journalist." Gunasekara said.
As per the gazette notification, complaints are forwarded to the Police Inspector General for investigation by the Secretariat established by the cabinet sub committee headed by Prime Minister.
Special complaints are forwarded by the sub committee directly to the Deputy Police Inspector General in charge of the division.
SLFP led main opposition challenged the gazette notification saying a legal action would be taken against the new division.
The Fraud and Corruption Investigation Division established by the Gazette now referred to as the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID).
This division will function under a Deputy Police Inspector General and a Director under the supervision of the Police Inspector General.
The division has powers to investigate within all the jurisdictions in Sri Lanka.
