Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) General Secretary Patali Champika Ranawaka yesterday denied the allegations made by the government that the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) had decided to support Maithripala Sirisena as he been promised a separate administrative unit based on ethnicity.
Addressing the media in Colombo, Ranawaka said that they had not agreed to give such a separate administrative district in Amapara based on ethnicity as claimed by the government, but it was the SLMC that agreed with the Sirisena’s election manifesto and that was why it had decided to support the common opposition candidate. "We never tolerate separatism. Therefore there is no such agreement between SLMC and Maithripala Sirisena," Ranawaka said.
Former Minister Ranawaka assured that there were no plans under Sirisena’s government to reduce the number of army personnel in the North, East or South.
The government was now trying to create fear in people by spreading rumours, Ranawaka said, adding that if there was a fear that the LTTE would raise its head once again in Sri Lanka, the JHU would stand against such an attempt.
It was the Parliamentary leader of the JHU, Athraliye Rathana Thera, who had led hundreds of protesters to reach the Mavil Aru sluice gates, which the LTTE had closed depriving farmers water, and after that only the government had opened its eyes, he claimed. "We have clearly mentioned that the changes to the constitution would be introduced only after a referendum. And we can certify that the changes would not adversely affect any religion or the unitary status of the country as well as its security,"he added.
Ranawaka said that the Maithri government comprising the representatives of all political parties would take legal action against all people who waged war, including LTTE activists like Kumaran Pathmanathan aka KP, who was currently being shielded by the Rajapaksa regime.
