The UNP leadership has decided to appoint Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka to the seat that fell vacant following the death of M.K.A.D.S. Gunawardena in order to take the ideology against the Rajapaksas to an attacking level, a minister from the party told Sri Lanka Mirror.
President Maithripala Sirisena has approved the step, according to him.
The entry of Fonseka to parliament is politically important and will be a strength to the government in view of the reluctance shown by most MPs and ministers in the government to target the Rajapakas in parliament with regard to their serious acts of fraud, corruption and human rights violations, said the minister.
Several foreign intelligence chiefs too, have expressed their delight at the ex-Army chief being absorbed into government ranks, say UNP sources.
They have observed with concern the attempts by racist groups such as Bodu Bala Sena, Sinhala Ravaya and Sinha Ley to provoke members of the armed forces in a bid to bring the Rajapaksas back to power.
The UNP says there is no legal hurdle against Fonseka’s taking oaths as a UNP national list MP.
A spokesman for his Democratic Party said that after the swearing in on Febraury 09, Fonseka will make a revelation to parliament about the hitherto unexposed acts of serious fraud, corruption and human rights violations committed by the then defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
They include the killing of Lasantha Wickramatunga and the enforced disappearance of Prageeth Ekneligoda.
