Discussions are presently underway to see that MP Namal Rajapaska, eldest son of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, is appointed deputy general secretary of the SLFP, reports say.
Initial agreement in this regard was reached when Mahinda met powerful SLFP figures at the funeral of the father of former media ministry secretary Charita Herath. It was attended by Maithri loyalists as well as strong supporters of Mahinda.
Several rounds of talks were held at that house in order to resolve the internal issue in the SLFP.
Mahinda loyalists did not object to incumbent general secretary Duminda Dissanayake.
Both Mahinda and Shiranthi have agreed to Namal being given the position.
Also discussed at these meetings was giving a powerful position to Basil Rajapaksa too. No agreement has been reached as to what position he will be appointed.
At the last general election, the Maithri faction had proposed, in order to unite the two factions, that Gotabhaya be fielded as the prime ministerial candidate, but Mahinda had opposed it.
