Justice and Buddhasasana Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe has taken measures to vest powers of a Justice of Peace (JP) in 15,000 Grama Niladhari officers who are in permanent government service, the Ministry of Justice said.
Ministry of Justice Media Secretary Harsha B. Abeykoon said this step was taken under instructions from President Maithripala Sirisena and will be implemented with immediate effect under provisions of the special gazette notification No.1954/34 dated 18 February. Approximately 15,000 Grama Niladharis officers will be vested with the powers of a JP within the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of each Grama Niladhari, he said.
This move empowers Grama Niladharis to approve affidavit documents and recommending and approving documents related to State services. That Grama Niladhari officers will now also act as JPs will prove to be very convenient to the people.
