Chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, President Maithripala Sirisena was of the view that if a group of Party Members wanted to breakaway to form a new political party, it could not in any way be stopped and should be faced, MP Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said.
Abeywardena who participated in the Party’s Central Committee meeting chaired by Sirisena and held on February 12, added that the Central Committee had decided to appoint a disciplinary inquiry committee to look into taking disciplinary action against those Party Members (like the pradeshiya sabha chairman who had torn up a letter sent by the Party asking him to show cause) who have erred in the way of the Party’s Constitution.
It was also observed by the President that while the dissident group, the Joint Opposition, could continue to function as at present, they operating as an independent group however posed a bit of a problem, Abeywardena noted.
“As per Section 23 (1) of the Standing Orders of the Parliament and regarding time allocation as is applicable solely for political parties, Sirisena said that a meeting would be called with him, the Central Committee and the Joint Opposition to sort out the issue of time allocation for the Joint Opposition. The matter regarding the new political office opened by former President, former Party Chairman and MP Mahinda Rajapaksa was not discussed,” he explained.
General Secretary of the SLFP, Minister Duminda Dissanayake and Media Spokesman of the Party, MP Dilan Perera were not available for a comment.
