ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's former defence secretary sought help from sorcerers to secure the re-election his brother Mahinda Rajapaksa at January presidential elections, an astrologer who accurately predicted his defeat has said.
Blind astrologer Indika Thotawatte shot to fame when he insisted on a private television channel last year that Rajapaka was headed for a major defeat despite all his other fellow seers predicting a resounding victory.
In a newspaper interview, Thotawatte said soon after his pronouncement, the then defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa approached him and so did the then president's media unit.
"The former president's people spoke to me, but it was not to threaten me or anything like that. They wanted my help for him to win," he told the state-run Silumina newspaper over the weekend.
"Gotabhaya Mahattaya (gentleman) was asking if there can be some sorcery that could change the course of events. But I said that defeat was certain. The January 8 victory (of Maithripala Sirisena) had the blessings of nature.
Thotawatte said the August 17 parliamentary election was also extremely unfavourable to Rajapaksa who is trying to be a prime ministerial candidate from the opposition UNited people's Freedom Alliance (UPFA).
"I don't know who decided on this date (Aug 17). It is extremely bad for Mr. Rajapaksa. He may win a seat, but there is no way he can be the next prime minister. The planetary position on August 17 is malefic for Mr. Rajapaksa."
However, he said Prime Minister's Ranil Wickremesinghe's horoscope had nothing unfavourable, but the country could see an improvement after January 2017.
Former leader Rajapaksa's astrologer Sumanadasa Abeygunawardena confessed in an interview with a foreign news agency that he knew his boss was heading for a major defeat, but did not have the courage to forewarn him.
"Had I told him about the impending defeat, then he would have been demoralised and there would have been an even bigger defeat," Abeygunawardena had said.
Predictably, he is not making any forecasts for the upcoming elections.
