Convener of the United National Party
(UNP) Media Committee, Mangala Samaraweera has held several rounds of
discussions, over the last few days, with United Peoples' Freedom Alliance
(UPFA) national organizer, Basil Rajapaksa over rejoining the government.
Samaraweera had demanded from Rajapaksa for either the Ministry of External Affairs or the Ministry of Ports and Shipping, if he were to join the government. Rajapaksa however, had refused to give in to the demand and had made it clear to Samaraweera that he would not be given the posts he wanted.
Samaraweera, in turn, had insisted that he be allowed to meet the President in order to come to a final decision on the matter. This request too was denied and he was promptly informed that once an agreement over rejoining the government was reached, Samaraweera could meet the President.
In the meantime it is also learnt that Samaraweera had informed Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and Malik Samarawickrama that he would be rejoining the government.
While such talks hung in the balance, Samaraweera left to Singapore early yesterday (5) morning and is expected to rejoin the government on his return.
