Japan questions Mattala airport cost!

Japanese government representatives have questioned from the Sri Lankan government as to why as much as Rs. 50 billion had been spent on the completely-failed Rajapaksa airport in Mattala, while the estimated cost for the much bigger terminal 2 at the Katunayake airport, which is to be built as a JICA project, is only Rs. 30 billion (260 million USD).
This terminal 2 is twice the size of the present Katunayake airport, and will have between 25 and 30 flyovers with modern facilities. Since the Mattala airport is a project about 25% the size of terminal 2 project, spending Rs. 50 billion on the Mattala airport cannot be justified, they have pointed out.
In response, Sri Lanka government representatives said that they were unable to furnish details, as the Mattala airport was a project funded by the Chinese government.
After the terminal 2 project, which is to begin within a year, another JICA project, the Kelani bridge, is to be initiated.
