The 19th of November this year marks the 10th death anniversary of the towering judicial stalwart, Sarath Ambepitiya who served as a fearless judicial officer featuring in the vanguard of those in the state who fought against organized crime.
He even challenged the once powerful LTTE by presiding over the judicial process pertaining to the Central Bank bombings, which culminated with the delivering of a 200 year jail sentence to LTTE leader Prabhakaran.
For Ambepitiya, no one was above the law. His zealousness in fighting crime was inspired by his dogged determination to serve as an ally to those who were powerless in society and sought protection from the judiciary against the more nefarious elements.
On 20th November 2004, Ambepitiya joined that elite pantheon of Sri Lanka’s leaders who paid the ultimate price for being tireless crusaders of justice. He was felled by a bullet of a gunman. Apart from leaving an entire country in mourning, he also left behind his loving and doting wife Vajira and his son Sithira.
Despite being a man of national prominence, Ambepitiya was also a great family man, who was adamant about spending quality time with his family regardless of professional commitments.
In a day and age when organized crime continues to be very much part of daily life, we, the citizens of Sri Lanka, join Vajira and Sithira Ambepitiya in mourning the loss of one of Sri Lanka’s great sons.
May he attain the supreme bliss of Nibbana.
