The Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID)’s current investigation into former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s son Yoshitha Rajapaksa’s suspected involvement in money laundering will have no immediate bearing on his career in the Navy as a Lieutenant.
Navy Spokesman Captain Akram Alavi said though Yoshitha Rajapaksa was connected with a number of matters, he was yet to be charged.
The FCID investigation into Yoshitha Rajapaksa’s alleged involvement in financial fraud is a civil one, he noted, adding that elsewhere, the Navy had appointed a board of inquiry to look into Yoshitha Rajapaksa allegedly going abroad 25 times without the approval of the Navy Commander during the time he was attached to the Presidential Secretariat.
“This is the current stalemate. The Navy and the Ministry of Defence will continue on with the proceedings, after which a summary trial will be conducted and necessary action meted out,” he added. Yoshitha Rajapaksa with several others including Minister Arjuna Ranatunga’s brother Nishantha Ranatunga are presently in remand custody as they are being investigated for their involvement with dealings of the Carlton Sports Network. Police Media Spokesman, Assistant Superintendent of Police Ruwan Gunasekera said once the FCID investigation concluded, the Attorney General would proceed to indict the suspect in the High Court if there was substantive evidence against them.
