The United National Front for a Good Governance has decided to field Sarath Fonseka from the Kurunegala District in order to create a stiff competition for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who will be contesting from the same district.
Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka's Democratic Party has already handed over nominations to contest solo from the Colombo and Gampaha Districts.
Fonseka is to spearhead the Colombo group while his wife Anoma Fonseka is to lead Gampaha district.
However, political sources cite that Sarath Fonseka is to contest from the Kurunegala district under the 'elephant' symbol after scrapping the above nominations.
In return, it has been agreed to grant Fonseka a special post under a 'Good Governance' government, sources add.
'Started politics from North West'
Meanwhile, addressing a group of party activists at the Greenfield Hotel in Thiththawella, Kurunegala, Fonseka has said that he had commenced politics from the North Western Province.
"After coming out from prison, I commenced politics from the North Western Province. We believe that the Kurunegala district is a very special location in local politics. It is a huge vote base which is able to make a marked difference in politics. At this election, the betel leaf will be defeated in Kurunegala," he has said.
