Basil faces many more serious allegations

Rs. 105 million belonging to the Tourism Promotion Authority and the Tourism Promotion Bureau under the then minister Basil Rajapaksa had been used for political work of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, charges UNP MP Nalin Bandara.
State money had also been used in the campaign of Shashindra Rajapaksa at the Uva provincial council election, he said at a media briefing yesteday, the first in a series to make exposures of corruption and fraud that had taken place during the previous regime.
The Solutions Group and First Media Solution had respectively been paid Rs. 42.3 m and Rs. 57 m to print and distribute large cutouts, banners and stickers to promote Mahinda Rajapaksa, he charged.
A television channel had been paid Rs. four m for election advertisements.
Another Rs. five m had been used to bring Buddhist monks to election rallies of the ex-president.
Also, money had been paid for meals given at the Orutota Road, Gampaha home of Basil Rajapaksa to supporters engaged in campaigning at the presidential election, said the MP.
The detailed files have been handed over to the attorney general’s department, he added.
