ECONOMYNEXT - Importers of off-the-road tyres from Sri Lanka, India and China are fighting a 'dumping' claim by a US tyre maker and trade unions who are asking for punitive duties to limit competition.
Importers have said that claims of 'dumping' are a 'gross misrepresentation of facts and a cyclical downturn is responsible for a drop in Titan, a US tyre maker, Tyrebusiness.com, a news portal said.
They had also said lower raw material costs caused OTR tire prices to fall in the US, in a testimony at the International Trade Commission (ITC) in Washington.
Titan and the United Steelworkers had petitioned the ITC on January 8 for antidumping and countervailing duties against mounted OTR tire imports from China, and both mounted and unmounted tires from India and Sri Lanka.
Critics say anti-dumping laws are a protectionist technique used by domestic producers to limit competition from imports and charge higher prices from customers, where blatant protectionism is not possible due to consumer awareness.
