Democratic Party leader, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, who
is due to take oaths on the coming 09th to fill the parliamentary seat that
fell vacant following the death of lands minister M.K.A.D.S. Gunawardena, is to
be given a powerful ministry, say UNF sources. The related MoU is to be signed
between the UNP and the DP on Tuesday the 02nd at Sirikotha.
Although there is some opposition within the UNP to Fonseka
being given the position, party chairman Malik Samarawickrama and leader Ranil
Wickremesinghe have appeased those protests and agreed to grant the seat to
Fonseka. UNP sources say justice minister Wijedasa Rajapakse has objected to
the PM in this regard.
Samarawickrama believes the enmity between Fonseka and
Rajapakse could be ended after the former joins the government.
In the UNP-DP MoU, a request is to be made to grant the law
and order ministry to Fonseka, say UNF sources.
